Education researchers has been busy the past few months with new studies that explore the effects of kindergarten, single-gender classes, and extended school time, along with the effects of teacher assistants, sports, bullying, and more.  We’ve outlined some of the most interesting research below:

 
Teachers Rejects State & National Unions in Kansas

For the seventh time since 2009, a Kansas school district has voted to decertify their local teachers association from the KNEA and National Education Association (NEA). Spearville, the latest district to vote on such a measure, recently sought the assistance of the Kansas Association of American Educators, an AAE state chapter in order to gain their independence to form a local bargaining unit.

 
Innovative Classroom Furniture for a New Age

Quick! I say classroom furniture and you think–desks and chairs. The traditional student desk has been the mainstay of classrooms for well over 100 years. Popularized by the factory model of education, this piece of furniture was ideal for keeping classes in nice, neat rows. Since school work at the time focused on individual achievement and not collaboration, the fact that an individual desk also gave each student their own workspace was ideal.

Teachers are faced with a plethora of choices for their professional development.  Organizations of all size and type offer opportunities to teachers.  If teachers had an infinite amount of time and money, they’d be able to attend everything, but unfortunately both time and money are limited resources.  So, how should a teacher decide which opportunity they should try?

 
Esteemed Teacher Celebrates 100th Birthday

New Jersey’s Agnes Zhelesnik will leave a last impression on her students. Having just celebrated her 100th birthday, Ms. Zhelesnik, or “Granny” as her students call her is the oldest working teacher in America.
